All software is distributed on USB drives for easy transport between home, school, and work.  No time limits.  No limit on the number of tests.  Our software will not lock you out.

*****   Important.  Please read prior to purchase.  *****

If your sea time for your upgrade started prior to March 24, 2014, you will test under the previous examination system.   All of our current exam preparation material is designed for this system.  If your sea time started after March 24, 2014, you will test under the new system.  Also, in 2019 all mariners will test under the new system regardless of the date their sea time started.

We are currently putting test material together for the new system and are aiming for July of 2015 to have this license preparation completed.  We will continue to offer software for both the new and the old system until 2019 at which time we will solely offer software for the new system. If you have further questions on how these changes affect your personal situation, please contact the National Maritime Center - (888) 427 5662.

3rd Engineer

Mariner Advancement 3rd & 2nd ENG examination preparation software is designed for 3rd Assistant Engineer Motor and Steam Licenses.  Our software contains:

Steam Propulsion---1975

We have also included a new section containing all of the electrical questions that the USCG has released that did not release with the referenced illustration. These illustrations are not included due to the fact the USCG claims they do not own the copyright to the material but they are working to create new public domain illustrations.  Currently, there is no way to acquire these illustrations as they have not been released to the public.

See Products for screen shots and general information or download the latest 4.1 manual here to see all of the features available.

The premium content includes written explanations, groupings of related questions, solutions, and edited illustrations to over 1800 of the U.S.C.G engineering exam questions. We provide explanations for refrigeration graphs, vernier calibers, electrical problems, barge displacement problems and more. Currently, the additional content covers the electrical, general, and motor sections.  Not all of the exam questions have this feature.  We will continue to add additional content in the future.  Any new additions will be available as free updates for at least one year from purchase; these updates will be downloadable from our updates navigation bar at the top of this web page.

The flash drive also contains an Engineering Resources folder that includes U.S. Navy training manuals.  These are in PDF format and include: Damage Controlman, Engineman, Fireman, Machinery Repairman, Introduction to Electrical, Introduction to Generators, Tools, and Fluid Power.  Many of the coast guard questions come from these manuals.

If you are ready to purchase simply click on the "Add to Cart" button at the top of the page and PayPal will walk you through the transaction; your financial information is not shared with Advancement Software LLC. Once your payment is complete, you will be emailed a receipt for your  transaction, and we ship our products on the next business day from purchase.

  • Each question provides a reference for the USCG book and question number.
  • The user has a choice as to the number of questions per test.
  • The user has the option to display all answer choices or only the correct answer.
  • The user has the ability to tag questions while testing and revisit the tagged questions through the tag question menu without having to search through the entire question database.
  • The user has the ability to go back through the current test questions and review questions already answered.
  • Full search utility of all questions and illustrations.
  • USCG released illustrations are provided in the software and loaded with each relevant test question.

  • Speech synthesizer is new to version 4.1.
  • Preview screens are new to version 4.1 which speeds up testing by allowing the user to determine if they need  to take the time to load the explanation or illustration in full screen mode.
